Mixed-use space for perpetually expanding Georgia Ports Authority
As one of the largest expanding ports in the nation, Georgia Ports takes great care and attention to logistic planning when expanding their facilities. This addition acted as a mixed-use space and serves as a break area for employees, kitchen, and assembly area. Completed in 2012, Tharpe Engineering Group provided structural design, construction documentation, and construction administration for this project.
The structural system consisted of structural precast concrete walls and long span steel bar joists supporting a non-composite metal deck and concrete slab roof system. Rigorous diaphragm analysis and detailing allowed all lateral loads to be resisted by the exterior walls, eliminating the need for interior steel frames or shear walls and achieving the expansive, open plan desired by the end-user.
