Sustainable mass timber blending tradition with cutting-edge innovation
As the first 'brick and beam' buildings constructed in New York City in nearly a century, 320 and 360 Wythe are notable for their use of mass timber, more specifically NLT (nail-laminated timber), as the primary structural material, and for their use of new construction technology to achieve a traditional aesthetic. The exterior finish of the buildings, while integrating seamlessly with the Williamsburg streetscape, is unique in that the brick veneer is supported by a timber structure. The black spruce wood used in this project was sourced from sustainably managed Canadian forests and engineered for construction by Nordic Structures, an internationally recognized mass timber producer.
Tharpe Engineering Group provided all structural design, construction documentation, and construction administration services for both of these mixed-use buildings, which include retail, office/commercial, and residential spaces, as well as one subterranean parking level.
Meticulous structural analysis was required to maintain acceptable lateral drift tolerances while minimizing the introduction of vertical and horizontal bracing into the otherwise clean aesthetic of the exposed wood.
